Lake Khuvsgul is one of the largest lakes in Mongolia of freshwater. It is also called as the younger sister of Lake Baikal. It is so because it is located in the west of the southern end of Lake Baikal. This lake can proudly introduce itself as one of the 17 ancient lakes in the world. This is more than 2 million years ago. It is also one of the important sources of drinking water because it is made up of fresh water. The water of this Lake does not need any treatment, it is potable without it. There are so many endangered species in the lake. The area of the lake is referred to as National Park. There are many wild animals like wolf, brown bear, Musk deer, elk, Wolverine, Sable, etc.

Uvs Lake

This lake is saline. This is located in some part of Russia also. It is larger than Lake Khuvsgul. This is the largest lake in Mongolia. The full name of this lake is Uvs Nuur. It is also called as Ubsa Nor. The word ‘Nuur’ means lake in the Mongolian language. The water of this lake is not drinkable. The water of this lake is as salty as of the water of the oceans. It is due to sulfate and sodium ions. There are around 29 species of fish in this lake. When you go between October and May to visit this lake, you will find that it has got frozen. There are many parts in the surroundings of this lake that have been declared as protected sites. There is a cluster of protected sites. These clusters are 12 in number. The UNESCO is calling all the 12 sites together as Uvs Lake site.
